23.04.2025 (1): Annie Ernaux and Rosamond Lehmann
In her (masterpiece) book The Years, Annie Ernaux mentions that when she was 18 or so she read Rosamond Lehmann's Dusty Answer. I'm not sure why but this fact cheers me. It makes me realize that yes, I am reading all the cozy little stations on the wide track of English Literature. I only need another famous writer to mention, say, Carson McCullers, or Alice Munro (several have mentioned Flannery O'Connor, tonnes have mentioned Flaubert, a few Eudora Welty) and I can really grin and be happy.
I'm pleasantly sad that I read Dusty Answer only when I was 27 though. So late in the day! Still, better late than never. I'm not sure if she found Lehmann too romantic but I don't think so, and even if she did, I don't think she really looks down on romance.
