Day 205.2: Reading Flaubert and Then Christina Henry

Today I read Flaubert's novella A Simple Soul, which I thought was nicely resonant with all those twinned themes and the holy spirit being a parrot. Maybe there's quite a bit of condescension there on the author's part? But I thought it was a rather excellent realist piece about a true heroine and he calls her such - the heroine. She lives according to her ideals and is true to the end. I liked Felicite.

Then I went from there to Near the Bone by Christina Henry, a monster thriller, which I thought was also nicely resonant with the twin abusers (the creature and the husband). The characterization is a bit wanting, but I'm enjoying it very very much!
