I had a rather happy day today, spent a really long and happy time reading You'll Enjoy It When You Get There (the character doesn't, spoilers) and happy to report that yes, Elizabeth Taylor writes very well about loneliness. I think she's a much less resigned Anita Brookner, and while I found some of her shorter works mystifying, I really like her longish ones: The Letter-writers (about what's called a real-life meetup nowadays, gasp), Summer Schools (about two sisters and their contrasting summers), and Girl Reading (about a girl's found family, I suppose?)

I then made to work on my crackship, but was distracted by reading stuff about population in Nagano Prefecture, and from there to my AU. A person said their wife was really into it and, well, I'm definitely easily swayed by flattery. So I worked on AU instead and shuffled stuff around, and wrote and planned. It was quite nice!

I think I've hit on the right balance between slight angst and determination for this AU, although it still reads as very clumsy. I'll pare more and more from the thing until I've sharpened it up.
