Finished The House Next Door. I have to say: the horror surprised me. I did not expect to be this creeped out by talk of real-estate and throughout the read I was puzzling whether the real-estate was a metaphor for something. It was - I think - but more of a stand-in for everything hopeful but also dark. Col and Walter really are self-satisfied, very smarmy people towards the end, and the class commentary was very good. They described what must have been pretty ordinary people as 'hungry'. The terror makes so much sense to them as upper middle-class (rich) people, with public humiliations and being called insane and strange.
