Finished Mothering Sunday, and I must say it's rather thrillerish and about writing! I really liked the toggling between ages and the very deft observations on that strange time-warp thing that happens when you think something significant is happening. Jane really inhabits that space I think. And also the sense of other lives intersecting: You really don't get answers, things are still mostly mysteries in life, but the fun thing is that those mysteries are more like sea creatures swimming underwater: you do get the fun of watching shadows.

Loved just how much of that life is packed in this novella, Ethel especially, and of course Paul. I don't think I was punched in the gut by the emotional turns, but that isn't what this novella is about I think.

And I think this counts as a book about books. Books are definitely the focus of love here, and so much of the book is Jane using her imagination to drop herself into those unrevealed lives. I think it works beautifully.
