I've been half-asleep this past month - not my fault, for the most part, work has been such a monster. But today I'm going back and squaring off with my nemesis of a WIP: Thoughts at 4 AM, aka the Alice/Marisa Lydia Davis fic. I've been working on this fic since 2023. I finished my first draft in 2024, but it was incredibly rough. Lydia Davis's style is incredibly difficult to balance - the sounds in her work especially, are in that strange twilight between spoken speech and written form.
Also Alice loves to ramble. She isn't a gracious rambler either; she goes off into strange tangents, and I struggle to keep her on track.
But the fic is very nearly finished. It's sitting at a heavy 10k words, and it has been haunting me for the better part of a year. I guess this is the time to formally return to it and embrace it in all tenderness. Today I did something called WIP-triaging at the recommendation of a friend, and it's revealed to me this fundamental fact: That I've been procrastinating for a year and more, and that I should finish Alice's story as best I can.
I'm looking at the yawning chasm that is complete rewrite. Redrum! At least I'm awake again, I can sense I'm drowning in the icy lake and I'm trying to smash the ice.
