06.11.2025 (1): Aftersun and Marriage
Nov. 6th, 2025 09:10 pmI had an early day today and after reading up on the conditions of migrant workers in Taiwan (not as agentless as you might think) and finishing the dissertation on that, went home in the rain, and watched Aftersun. Wonderful, wonderful film, with that texture any wonderful film has: The scene where Sophie (my name!) sleeps and breathes in her sleep as her father lights a furtive cigarette - that feels incredibly real. Sophie probably was in a light sleep and experienced that. And also, that last dance scene! That desperate love at the end, and the act of her father...
I'm a crier and I'm surprised I did not cry. The last act especially broke my heart. An incredibly, incredibly personal film I was lucky to watch.
Also, I've taken to reading The House of Mirth because I thought Lucy's conditions accord with my own. How surprised I was! Lucy's condition is much, much worse than my own. I also wrote something...
