Dec. 23rd, 2025 09:20 pmA strange series of days this week (and the last) in which I always slept late and woke up early. I think it put a weird cast to things, separate from the fact that doing that makes me very sleepy throughout the day. I decided to pick up The Graveyard Apartment by Mariko Koike and I'm very much liking the hints of horror so far (especially the underground shopping arcade to nowhere: gives me chills!) While I really liked The Narrow Road... I think I'll need time to recover from that book, so I'm turning to horror, which is less scary than history.
I haven't been feeling that old nostalgic melancholy - saudade - that drives a lot of my fiction I think, which is why I'm going to spend this end-of-year remembering and trying to feel that sweet pain, so I can write. I think of all writers, Alice Munro evokes that feeling best in me.
Today I wrote very little. I did see an extremely beautiful sunset, but only from the side.
