01.01.2026 (1): New Year Notes
Jan. 1st, 2026 10:26 pmI had a terrific New Year's Day, and I started off with Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels (wonderful, wonderful gems so far - bog-boy). I reflected a bit on myself a year ago: I feel more constraints this year, and I feel they'll tighten and tighten, but I think this will sharpen by writing. Fingers crossed. Remember: Elizabeth Taylor (the writer) wrote mostly after she was married. Carson McCullers as well (although her marriage completely melted). Alice Munro, too (although then she let her husband rape her daughter). Based on these cases, I think the taste of my writing will probably change, but I'll probably do my best writing in the future.
I think Anita Brookner was the only woman writer unmarried throughout her career, although of course she wrote about bad marriages. Hear my trying not to spell doom for myself.
I did also watch The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I still tear up.
