I think I received an illumination this session: Given her upbringing, and the society she's in, it would make sense if Seiran were very ready to lie and conceal (in ways familiar to everyone who's had to hide their identity), and would treat even a relatively normal conversation asking about what she collected when she was on the moon as some sort attempt to pry something out of her. Reisen is technically an officer, and I think Seiran would be very aware of the hierarchy. Seiran would try to please, and please in a way that would deflect attention from herself: Reisen would be aware of this, but not be aware of the source exactly (she's very aware of hierarchies as well, but she's less adept at reading her own status within the hierarchy. She remembers herself as fairly low-ranking even after being elevated, and as exceptional but not that exceptional). Reisen will of course see through this fairly quickly, but Seiran will persist a little.

I think I've very clumsily tried to fold this dynamic into the conversation, and it needs a lot of workshopping (ex. if Seiran is so very used to lying, she wouldn't think very dramatically of it - but at the same time I have to show the reader that she's lying, maybe by way of her soft questions at herself? I'm not sure yet. Another thing would be that Seiran would be able to lie her way out of this pretty easily), but the element's there and I think I'll let it get quite a bit of play.
